Ruxley Manor Garden Centre likes to think big. Offering exciting seasonal events, engaging family activities and an ever-expanding product range, the Kent-based business have been keeping things fresh for their customers since 1964. So when complex compliance management was shifting focus from the centre’s enterprising growth plans, they called on Southalls for an innovative, scalable safety solution.

With years of specialist sector expertise, Southalls mapped out a site-wide safety strategy to elevate standards across the key risk areas for all retail garden centres, plus the unique features that set Ruxley Manor apart – from a pet corner and play area to enchanted forests, ice rinks and a Santa’s grotto. Incorporating six-monthly audits, tailored staff training, food hygiene assessments and web-based access to all H&S data and documents, Southalls’ workable risk reduction measures allowed Ruxley Manor to keep a strict eye on compliance, while keeping creativity alive and well.

So the team now spend less time on the red tape of health and safety and more time cultivating colourful ideas.

ACO Technologies’ state-of-the-art surface water management systems make travel safer for car, air and rail passengers across the globe. We helped them build an equally innovative safety solution for their own team that realised cost savings of 20%.

With managers working against obsolete systems, limited H&S awareness and the demands of their day jobs, key compliance requirements were slipping through the net. It was time to transform ACO’s safety culture, powering up employees to take ownership of critical tasks like staff training, equipment reviews and risk assessments – and make compliance a key part of their company ethos.

In April 2015, ACO implemented Safety Cloud – our user-friendly health and safety management solution that places all compliance-related documents, policies and data in a central online hub.  Working alongside a dedicated Southalls expert, the team shaped a sustainable safety strategy that worked for ACO’s high-risk environment, covering comprehensive document audits, bespoke risk assessments and tailored policy templates.

Three years on, the benefits stretch beyond simple compliance to a proactive partnership based on inventive ideas, measurable results and employee buy in that’s built to last.

With ambitious plans to expand their family of casually classic French restaurants, Bistrot Pierre needed a scalable safety solution that could hold its own across 21 thriving outlets. Southalls’ frontline EHO expertise guided the business as they grew, helping them set exemplary health and safety standards in every kitchen while delivering unforgettable experiences front of house.

By implementing Safety Cloud H&S management software, Bistrot Pierre gave every site an instant, online window into key data, policies and training modules – as well as personal ownership of critical compliance tasks. Automated tools and templates – accessible on everything from a manager’s PC to a chef’s mobile – made quick but consistent work of daily back of house, bar and cellar checks. Meanwhile, more formal food hygiene assessments were seamlessly delegated, completed and authorised via a web-based process built on current regulations and bespoke in-house practices.

With incident stats – from staff injuries to customer complaints and claims – captured on the Safety Cloud system, Bistrot Pierre were able to pinpoint hot spots, track trends and take proactive steps to prevent future civil action.

Since 2015, Southalls’ proven education sector expertise has helped Solihull School meet exacting safety standards while fuelling the passions of their ambitious, adventurous pupils. The leading independent prides itself on a bold blend of classroom and co-curricular opportunities – from rock climbing and rugby to gardening and guerrilla theatre – and trusted Southalls to ramp up risk prevention without reining in the thrill of learning.

The partnership – which began with a rigorous review of Solihull’s H&S provision in high-risk areas – now covers ongoing operational support, long-term safety planning and bespoke staff training, set around teachers’ demanding curricular and club schedules.

With the flexibility of Safety Cloud, Southalls’ web- and app-based H&S management tool, Solihull School now conducts tailored site audits and routine maintenance checks – assessing everything from grounds equipment to their 800-seat auditorium – with confidence, clarity and consistency. It’s an approach that’s helped the school keep pace with changing HSE and Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) regulations and take their first-class facilities, and students’ learning experiences, from strength to strength.

Steel stockholders and distributors John Tainton had worked hard to build a solid safety track record across their UK and Ireland operations. So when an incident prompted a visit from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), they partnered with Southalls to take their approach to the next level.

With high-risk equipment and a schedule of mandatory inspections to manage, job one was the introduction of Safety Cloud, Southalls’ comprehensive, web-based H&S management tool. The system swapped cumbersome paper processes with a simple online solution that kept procedures, records and reporting current, consistent and compliant.

With Safety Cloud successfully streamlining practices enterprise wide, John Tainton made the leap to a fully-managed consultancy service in February 2017. By tapping into Southalls’ hands-on, one-to-one guidance on a rolling basis, the 90-strong team cut the cost of placing a permanent safety specialist on the payroll. Now employees are clued up, confident and clear of their role in the bigger compliance picture, and the partnership has built health and safety into the bedrock of the John Tainton business.

When East Anglia-based builders’ merchant Kent Blaxill were hit with a weighty fine for failing to ensure adequate separation of vehicles and pedestrians at its Colchester branch, the team got serious about safety. They looked to Southalls to create a H&S solution that’s cut reported accidents by 43%, dropped manual handling injuries by 32% and boosted days on the job by 78%.

An initial audit set the standard for the entire business, with full risk assessments, bespoke H&S policies and a back-to-basics redesign for the Bury St Edmunds yard. We then rolled out a progamme of safety excellence across all 13 regional locations and continued to raise the bar with rigorous six-monthly follow-up visits.

By implementing Safety Cloud software, Kent Blaxill created an instantly-accessible hub of all safety data and documents, allowing them to analyse accident stats, track trends and transform training and working practices for all employees – from drivers to directors.

With staff empowered to take responsibility across every site, Kent Blaxill has made compliance a consistent and core part of their operation.

As designers and manufacturers of high-performance residential and commercial joinery, family-run AJB Group understand that skilled craftsmanship relies on solid safety practices. So when a minor incident cued a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) consultation, they looked to Southalls to cover compliance from every angle.

After delivering on HSE recommendations, including the addition of a qualified Health and Safety Manager, AJB maintained momentum with a company-wide culture change. By implementing Safety Cloud software, key compliance tasks – from machinery checks to COSHH assessments – were easily delegated and delivered, sharing ownership across the business. Meanwhile, a bespoke on-boarding programme and training for current team members ensured safety standards remained an achievable priority for every employee.

With on-site and ad hoc guidance from Southalls, AJB took a safety-centric approach to a range of significant business transformations – from an ambitious site move and headcount additions to the purchase of cutting-edge equipment. AJB’s existing daily factory floor walks, weekly action plans and monthly audits were made even more effective with a suite of customised safety documentation, including tailored risk assessments, managers’ audits and site-specific health surveillance questionnaires.
